Here’s the next installment in Enna Isilee’s big birthday contest, since she's wonderful and I love to help out my bloggy friends. (For the uninitiated, Enna Isilee is the name of a character in Shannon Hale's Bayern books.) Today’s mode of entry is:

Do you prefer writing long-hand, or on a computer, or not at all?

That’s all you have to do! Just leave a comment on this post with your answer and you’ll automatically have 2 entries towards this week’s prizes and the grand prize. This week’s prizes will be announced on Monday, and the grand prize will be announced on Enna Isilee’s birthday, September 22nd.

Have fun!

I definitely prefer to write on the computer over long hand. I can type so much faster than I can write, and I can type a lot longer compared to long hand. It makes it easier for the ideas to flow, as well as correcting and editing later on down the road.

I used to love writing long-hand when I was in Jr. high and high school, but I have since come to like typing a lot better, since my ideas can come out instantly concrete, giving me a better sense of what they are and what I need to do with them. I still like writing long-hand for some brainstorming and most poetry, though.

i type faster than i can think, so i prefer typing. but letters are always better in longhand.

I prefer to write it out first and then type. I can write it out anywhere whereas typing requires me to have a laptop or computer near by.

Hmm...I like the sound of the keyboard, and certainly writing on the computer is easier...easier to change things and edit and stuff like that. But writing longhand is just so relaxing. I suppose really, I do prefer to write longhand, though I mostly write on the computer.

I prefer to type, though I did write out a novel long hand once. I hate looking at computer screens.

My tyepwriter is currently not working, so I haven't had chance to experiment with that.

On the computer, totally.

If I could write by hand as fast as I could type, it'd be a no brainer. But the truth is I need something that keeps up with my thoughts. Plus nothing ruins a flow like "hand cramp! hand cramp!" and the awkward hand shake.

Mine is a strange combination. I like to write my first draft out on the computer. My ideas often flow out like crazy and writing it by hand isn't sufficient, no matter how good my memory is (and it is pretty good). I like to "get it out" on a computer. But then, when I am editing, particuarlly when rewriting entire scenes, I find it the best thing in the whole world to write it out in one of several notebooks I have specially designated for that purpose. That way I can take it out with me wherever I may need to go to get the best insipiration (a library for a library scene, a meadow or mountain to better feel how my characters would).

Because quite frankly, one of the best advantages to having it in longhand is that when you enter it into the computer, you are actually editing while you are typing it in, because you see when you've used a word too many times, or as you write it in, you see an even better way to say it. For me, there is no better way to edit a manuscript.

Ideally, I would like to type out my first draft on a typewiter, because then I would have the best of both worlds. I would have the speed of a computer but I can't hesitate when I make a mistake, I just have to keep going and then when I enter it in the computer, it is actually the second draft. But there is something uniquely beautiful about writing it out longhand that I don't think I could ever give up. Wow, quite a long answer. Wasn't expecting that to come out of me.

And plus, a typewriter makes you feel like a real writer, with all the cool clinking sounds it makes. ;) (I'm totally thinkng Finding Forrester right here).

Longhand, because it gives me thoughts a little extra time between words, if that makes sense. Though if I wrote anything lengthy, I'd prolly learn to prefer computers.

I generally prefer to type because it's more efficient but I have a journal that I actually write in. As in, with my hands. Feels more authentic that way or something.

I love actually writing. Typing confuses my thoughts and turns out horrible. When I write its all out there on the page and then I can go back and rearrange it.

It depends on what I'm writing. For notes in school and papers, I'm definitely a computer gal, mostly because I can type quickly. However, if I am writing a letter to a friend I usually prefer long hand.

Also, random comment, I love your picture on the side bar. I have that t-shirt and absolutely love it. :-)

I write on the computer. I carry a small notebook around to write by hand if a computer is not an option.

Most of my writing is typing on the computer. That being said, I still love to write ("print") lists and notes. I find it easier to type because it's faster--my fingers can keep up with my brain.

On the computer...easier to edit.

September 5, 2008 at 3:21 PM

I like writing long hand...more tangible experience.

September 5, 2008 at 4:48 PM

How could I not love writing? Goodness me. I prefer long hand for note taking, journaling, and creative writing such as poetry. When writing essays and stories I mostly prefer computer. Scrivener, preferably. :D

computer all the way. it's easier for me to just write and easily correct thing as i go or change whatever i'm writing.

writing long-hand usually makes my hand hurt really fast too, and writing on the computer allows me to write more faster. :)

computer. yep.

September 5, 2008 at 7:21 PM

Even though I'm getting more used to writing on the computer, I still like to do my initial writing longhand.

Definitely on the computer... my handwriting's ugly!

i always start out wanting to write long hand, and then I get annoyed that it's too slow and transfer it all to the computer.

there is something so satisfying, though, about putting ink to paper.

September 6, 2008 at 9:30 AM

To me, writing long hand is definitely more convenient. It's fun, too, to see my words on paper. But writing on the computer is definitely quicker, and it looks neater, if you have to delete or move. Everything's more flexible on the computer. So both are fun.

September 6, 2008 at 10:13 AM

Definitely on the computer! It's so much easier to erase and edit stuff! When I write things down I tend to lose it, so if I type something down I know it's safer, lol!

Long hand all the way. Nothing like a pen and paper.

September 7, 2008 at 9:36 AM

I used to love writing long-hand, but how that I own a laptop I hardly ever do it anymore. I use long-hand for taking notes, and the computer to write the actual posts/stories/articles.

September 7, 2008 at 9:49 AM

Most of the time I prefer to write on the computer because I can get my thoughts together faster than by long-hand but sometimes I do write in long hand even though it's mostly hard to read.
